How PEX Fittings Are Used In Plumbing Systems
PEX is a water plumbing system constructed from high density polyethylene tubes. Special PEX Fittings are used to connect PEX tubing. PEX tubing is a flexible material that is easier and cheaper to install, is resistant to corrosion and requires fewer fittings than older plumbing systems.
The main advantages of PEX tubing is its ability to remain flexible in cold temperatures, its resistance to scale build-up and corrosion and its lower cost compared to metal or rigid pipes. PEX tubing is less expensive than copper pipe, requires less time to install and requires fewer fittings.
PEX tubing is stored on spools. Spools weigh less than metal or rigid plastic pipe making them less expensive to ship and easier to store. When used in an installation, PEX tubing can be unrolled directly from the spool and does not require coupling fittings. This saves the time and expense of running pipe. PEX tubing can be turned 90 degrees eliminating the need for elbow fittings. PEX tubing does not need to be soldered so there are no unhealthy fumes and dangers posed by using a torch.
There are a number of connection methods some of which are proprietary. But basically the fitting is inserted either over or into the tube and a ring is crimped over the tube or fittings. Rings can be made of plastic, copper or stainless steel. There are proprietary connection methods which require special tools and fittings.
Tubes are cut using a special PEX pipe cutter and come in different sizes to accommodate 1/2″ or 3/4″ tubes. A main crimping tool is used to pinch the rings over the pipe or fitting. There is a de-crimping tool that is used to remove crimped rings. There are some specialized tools used for the stainless steel clamps and proprietary connection methods.
Fittings are usually made of brass, although there are some made of bronze, copper and engineered plastic fittings for PEX. There are characteristic ridges on the “insert” part of the fitting. The ridges, the PEX tube and the crimped copper ring all work together to form a high-pressure seal.
Using the system of PEX fittings along with PEX tubing has definite advantages over metal and plastic piping. It is less expensive than rigid plastic and copper piping . It can be installed right from the spools. It requires less fittings. It last longer because it is not subject to corrosion.
