Avoid The Pitfalls Of Purchasing A Used-Car
In the UK, over 7 million of the 30 million cars currently on the road are bought and sold as used vehicles each year. Recent DVLA studies show that each year around a quarter of all private motorists buy a used car, whilst less than 1 in 10 buy a new one; and after buying a house, it is usually the biggest purchase we make. If you are considering buying a used car, it is important to follow some basic precautions before parting with your money.
Firstly, it is very important to give the car a basic mechanical check, in order to ensure that there are no hidden faults and that the bodywork is sound. Look for rust around the sills and wheel-arches, seams, door bottoms and suspension mountings. Use a magnet to check for body filler on the vehicle’s body panels. Also, check for oil or fluid leaks, damaged hoses and worn drive belts. Other checks include the door, window and sunroof for leakage and also examine the tyres – including the spare – for tread-depth and damage, such as bulges or cracks in the side-wall. If you are a competent mechanic, you can perform these checks yourself, but many reputable motoring agencies – such as RAC or AA – can also perform this check for you.
Conducting a search on the car’s history can reveal whether the car has been reported stolen, written off by an insurance company or has outstanding finance still awaiting payment by the previous owner. There are several companies that can carry out this check, including HPI, Experian and the RAC. It’s also wise to check the price of the car beforehand, just to make sure you don’t pay too much. The internet can provide you with valuations of similar cars on the market, but you can also check with Glass? Guide on the valuation of vehicles.
Ensure the seller has a new-style vehicle registration document, known as a V5C. These have replaced the old style V5 vehicle registration documents, and you shouldn’t accept these from the seller. Also, vehicles over 3 years old must have a valid MOT certificate.
You should also check that the condition of the car matches the stated mileage. Indications of high mileage include: shiny/worn steering-wheel or gear knob, worn pedal rubbers, excessive number of previous owners and a large amount of stone chips on the nose of the car. Also check that the screws on the instrument panel aren’t loose, scratched or rounded as this might indicate that it has been removed in order to alter the vehicle’s mileage – a procedure known as ?clocking?.
Another important check is to take the car for a test drive. Spend a little time driving the car and check the electrics, lighting and steering. Also check that the engine idles smoothly and that smoke is not expelled from the exhaust once the car has sufficiently warmed up, and that the brakes work effectively and don’t pull to one side.
Buying from a dealer can give you stronger rights than you would have when buying privately, but it will also usually cost you more. When buying from a dealer, the car will usually come with additional warranty or mechanical breakdown insurance. Some dealers will also offer car insurance as part of a deal, but it is often a good idea to shop around to get the best insurance deal to suit your needs. For example, some insurance companies will offer better prices on newer vehicles, while others are better for used vehicles, young drivers or drivers who have had a prior accident.
With many factors to consider when buying a used car, taking the time to research any potential purchase can help you to avoid the pitfalls, save you money, and provide several years of happy motoring!

Make Your Business Travel Easier With Better Technology
At one point not long ago travel time was considered dead time to the businessperson. Dead time while waiting on flights, on the plane and, worse, dead time in the hotel was, in general, considered to be wasted time. That’s not so today.
With the advent of WIFI in airports and hotels, travel time does not need to be a waste. We no longer even consider packing the laptop into the luggage. Rather, we carry it on the plane with us and use it during travel.
Most airports have now added the ability to hook into their broadband networks with an Ethernet cord. Better still, you can just boot up with a wireless card and you’re good to go. For a list of airports in the United States and Europe that offer free Internet hotspots check out this web site: http://www.wififreespot.com/airport.html.
This also goes for hotels and motels. Just boot up your computer and you’re back in the office. Some hotels offer high-speed Internet at an additional cost. But it’s usually packaged with long distance service or unlimited calling. Others offer the Internet connection free. Usually, all you need to do is supply your name and, in some cases, a room number, to connect. Other hotels may offer wireless service only in rooms within range of its network.
Even laptops not equipped with wireless cards can access the wireless Internet service at some hotels because guests can check out equipment at the desk. For wired connections, a cable may be supplied in the room. If you feel limited, as a lot of us do when tied to the wall with the Ethernet cable, consider adding a compact router to your briefcase. Several are now available for under $100 and their range is actually comparable to the full size router.
OK, so now you know how easy it is to connect. But what about the equipment? For seamless travel, most of us know that a laptop and a cell phone are essential lifelines for the business traveler, but what other technology and new equipment is available to the travelling businessperson?
Packing all of the pieces and toting them can be a hassle, to be sure. The luggage industry has finally realized this and has risen to the occasion. Today, more than ever, we are seeing compact bags that will pack the multitude of cords, wires and chargers needed for business travel.
It seems that the old heavy bags are a thing of the past and travelers now rely more on the backpack style to travel. They pack equipment that weighs several times more than their body size. The only real care to take is to make sure that the wireless card is safely stored in a pocket of the backpack – not in the computer, And for sanity’s sake, a lesson learned the hard way, pack an extra.
Whether you opt for the briefcase version or the easier-to-tote backpack, style and room is not going to be sacrificed. Both the traditional briefcase and the backpack are now roomier and well padded for the office essentials. Both styles come with and without wheels. The choice is the travelers, and there is a multitude of ways to go.
When it comes to business travel, pack the right tools and you won’t even know that you are out of the office. Advances in technology have made business travel easier than ever.

Green Technology Protects Environment and Consumer’s Wallet
Green cars are the current trend in the auto industry. The upward surge of gas prices and the increasing awareness of the global warming threat among consumers have prompted them to look for environmentally friendly and wallet friendly vehicles.
For decades, American motorists have favored larger cars like sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. Currently though, the demand for smaller and fuel efficient cars is increasing steadily. Going for green cars like the Toyota Prius not only protects the environment but also the consumer’s wallet. These green cars are known for their fuel efficiency thus reducing the amount of money spent on gasoline.
Aside from that, hybrid vehicles come with a tax incentive from IRS. Consumers are advised to consult their dealers about tax incentives they may avail of when purchasing a hybrid vehicle. Recently, a new money-saving issue has cropped up.
Insurance companies are now offering incentives for hybrid car owners. In fact, some insurance companies will automatically replace a hybrid car’s battery pack if the vehicle has been involved in an accident that damaged the stock battery pack. Currently, battery packs for hybrid vehicles are priced at about $3,000. Some insurance companies also offer premium discounts for hybrid car owners of up to five percent.
Hybrid vehicles are already numerous in the United States with domestic and international brands offering different hybrid cars. Ford is already leading the field for domestic car manufacturers in developing and producing hybrid vehicles. Asian brands like Nissan also offers hybrid version of their popular vehicles like the Altima sedan for the mentioned company. The Altima hybrid is essentially the common Altima except that it employs hybrid technology to complement its high performance parts such as Nissan strut bellow.
Toyota and Honda lead the pack with their host of hybrid vehicles. The Toyota Prius still remains as the most sought after gas hybrid vehicle in the United States and this is evident in increasing year over year sales of the model. Honda also offers a hybrid version of the Accord and the Civic.
Aside from going green on vehicles, Americans are also exploring new ways to save on their energy consumption. In California, almost 4,700 residents are using solar energy on their homes. In connection with that, insurance companies are also providing incentives for homeowners using solar energy on their homes. Candysse Miller, the executive director of the Insurance Information Network of California, has this to say: ?Environmental awareness and action is more than just good for the planet – it can be good for your wallet. Not only can you save with reduced energy bills, but some insurers are offering insurance packages to address this growing market segment.?

Enzymes Vitamins and Minerals
A balanced diet should be composed of a variety of raw vegetables. Emphasizing the fact that the vegetables should be organic or the best of what is available. A variety of vegetables assure the proper enzymes, vitamins and minerals.
Juices are the best way to reach the full amount of enzymes, vitamins and minerals for the body’s daily uses. Enzymes are the key elements of nourishment to the body. The enzymes enable the body to digest food and absorb it into the blood. For example, some enzymes break down the protein, carbohydrate and fat molecules of foods into smaller molecules; others assist in passing these molecules from the intestines to the bloodstream and yet, there are others using the molecules to build structures of cellular constituents. The enzymes are in the seeds, the sprouting part of the plant.
Replenishment is the law of life; if we do not eat we die. Eating the wrong foods and not replenishing enzymes, vitamins and minerals shorten life and one could suffer along the way.
There are some diseases, such as albinism, lack of normal pigmentation in the skin and hair of a person, animal or coloration of a plant, result from an enzyme deficiency. It is necessary to use a trustworthy supplement to replenish enzymes and nutrients.
Without knowing how fresh-raw vegetables and fruit juices work in the body, one would think why not eat the vegetables and fruits instead of juicing. Solid foods require digesting and with juices, the body will not need to digest. Nourishment gets to the cells and body tissues quickly.
There is no nourishment in fiber. Eating solid foods cause the body hours to process. Extracting juice and setting the fiber aside for later use, the body can receive nourishment immediately and generate energy. Enzymes are responsible for storage and release of energy.
Fiber is required even though there are no nutrients, when eaten, raw the fiber acts as a broom in the intestines, sweeping it clean. When food is cooked, fiber acts as a mop swabbing the intestines leaving residue causing a build up. The colon becomes sluggish, constipation, inflammation of colon, and other disturbances can occur.
Before starting, different food regiments consult a health care professional.
Juicing vegetables and fruits gives the body an avenue to digest and assimilate nutritional enzymes. The digestive system uses little energy because juice requires minimum digestion, saving energy. After a large meal, the body slows down, because the energy is used to process the meal.
Raw vegetable juices are necessary as a supplement to every diet. A raw food regiment without sufficient quantity and variety can be equally deficient as cooked foods. A fresh raw variety of organic vegetables supply the body with amino acids, minerals, salts, enzymes, and vitamins. The quality of vegetables has a bearing on the results.

What’s On Tap? A Whole Lot Of College Football?
Most people look forward to Christmas or New Year’s as it gives them a chance to raise a cheer with all their good friends and family members. I, on the other hand, am completely dysfunctional and my greatest moment every year is the start of the College Football season. That’s when the excitement of football betting kicks off. The 2006 season is right at our doorstep and will begin Thursday at 6:00 pm EST when the Central Michigan Chippewas host ACC powerhouse, Boston College. The visitors are favored by 13 1/2 but they have their minds on Clemson coming to their house the following week.
Emotional game in Oxford, Ohio as Northwestern faces Miami of Ohio. Thirty one-year old Pat Fitzgerald begins his coaching career on the road as he replaces Randy Walker who passed away suddenly this year. Miami of Ohio has some game breakers and I would be careful laying -4 with a road favorite at my favorite sportsbook!
Year two of the Steve Spurrier reign in South Carolina begins on the road at Mississippi State. SC is favored by 6 and word has it that the Gamecocks are loaded with speed and you know they will have some gimmicks in their trick bag.
Very interesting spread in San Diego as it looks like the bookmakers are begging you to take UTEP. The Aztecs introduce their new coach, Chuck Long, who comes over from Oklahoma. The Miners have Carson Palmer’s brother, Jordan, heaving the football and coach Mike Price who is one of the best in the business. UTEP has been a darling of the sports bettors the past two years, with outstanding cover percentage!
In North Carolina on Saturday the Tar Heels welcome Rutgers to their den and this line of NC – 5 1/2 is rather low. The Scarlet Knights are a very good team and they gave Arizona State a tough go in the bowl game last year. I have to lean with the dog!
Everyone is touting the Cal Golden Bears as a BCS contender, yet you can get them at +2 against the underachieving Tennessee Volunteers. Phil Fulmer’s crew has been burning bettor’s cabbage the past few years and they will have their hands full. Can they handle the 100,000 folks in the stands?
What about Pittsburgh -4 1/2 against ACC Virginia? Former Bear and Dolphin coach Dave Wannstedt is in year two and word has it that the Panthers are a much improved team. They have not been kind to the bettors lately, but I plan on laying the points.

The Importance Of Travel Insurance For Canadians
When you travel, you are probably concerned about having good insurance coverage, should something ever happen and you need it. While you are probably concentrating more on having fun on your vacation, making sure you will be well taken care of should an accident or unforeseen event occur is a very important consideration. That is why it is good to purchase travel insurance just for the occasion.
When choosing good coverage there are several factors to consider. You want to be sure you are covered in just about any aspect as your normal coverage would provide you at home. Important features are emergency room coverage, accident coverage, and hospital stays.
This becomes especially important if you will be traveling outside Canada. In order to make your policy work, you need to make sure there is a co-operative relationship between the policy holder and the company providing the insurance. Because the medical treatment around the world is so broad and varied, the home-based insurance companies will often provide you with booklets that outline what they will and won’t cover. That is why it is very important for you the purchaser to become to become as familiar as you possibly can with the basic guidelines of the policy before an emergency ever occurs. Decision so any reimbursement of expenses are not likely to be the first thing when you are in an urgent situation. Below are a few guidelines for insurance financial coverage should an emergency occur.
BE sure to obtain authorization. As soon as possible, be sure to call the number for the emergency service center provided policy. The role of the service center is to manage your medical care and make the overall claim process faster and more efficient. The center should provide claim administrators, on site doctors, nurses, and other medical officials to arrange to help manage your care and monitor any treatment that may become necessary in an emergency situation. If possible, do not proceed with any treatment before receiving the proper authorization.
I
N order to assist in the claims process more efficiently, you should supply all information and facts you can as accurately as possible. Keep a log of the contacts at both service center and your insurance company. This includes the names of people assisting you, the date of contact, what was discussed during any conversations that took place.
You should also keep a detailed record of all medical transactions and get receipts for all medical care including: tests, treatments, and proscriptions. Receipts are an absolute must when making a claim, and you never know when you may need them. You should also observe the time limits of your policy. Complete the supplied forms and enclose all bills signed by the attending physician, along with receipts and any supporting claim documentation that will prove necessary when filing your claim. Also include all numbers such as those pertaining to your policy, along with your date of birth and any other requested information that will make the process faster and more efficient.

Automobile Insurance Is Necessary for Used Cars Too
Automobile insurance is a tough aspect of life that many people would rather do without. They would rather do without auto insurance right up until the moment that their insurance covers the costs, or a large percentage of the cost, when they get into an accident. Insurance is designed to prevent against losses incurred as a result of traffic accidents, so it does its part to save the insurance holder and the accident victim a whole lot of strife. In the end, you will be glad you have automobile insurance.
Car insurance is one of those facts of life we would rather not discuss, but is just plain necessary. There are many kinds of coverages offered by car insurance companies. We are always looking for smart ways to save on our auto insurance each year. I have found that buying used cars is the smart way to buy a vehicle. One of the best reasons for buying a used car is to save a good amount of money on car insurance coverage.
If you drive a used car it is very possible that you are paying less money for car insurance. An insurance company bases much of your insurance rate on the value of the car, and the fact of the matter is, a used car is less valuable and therefore carries a lower premium with insurance companies. Some drivers of used cars choose not to carry comprehensive car insurance to save some money. They can do this because the overall value of their car is less than a brand new car, and fixing minor damage while the car was stationary is less devastating than a crash. However, collision insurance is a must for all drivers on the road.
Looking for cheaper rates many drivers are turning toward online insurance carriers. In fact, finding a rate online can be painless, reliable, and save money all at once. The accessibility of online insurance is convenient; being able to file a claim at any time of day helps with peace of mind after an accident. Online insurance companies take into account factors like: the type of car you drive, where you live, your driving record, and estimated driving habits; and they create a guaranteed rate right their on the spot and show you different options for coverage.
Along with checking online for automobile insurance, many people try a number of things to get the best low car insurance rates. The top tip, according to experts, is to shop around at a variety of sources both on the internet and on the street. Getting a variety of quotes for your particular policy can make the decision making process easier and can create a more informed customer for decision time. Another good idea is to try to save money using the multi-vehicle discounts. Many providers offer discounts for insurance if you are insuring more than one car, so try to insure all of your vehicles with the same insurance provider to keep a low car insurance rate.
As with many things in life, there are opportunities to save money if you look in the right places. If you decide on high deductibles, for instance, you can cut some corners and save a considerable amount on your car insurance. Another good idea is to drop collision coverage altogether on older vehicles, allowing your automobile insurance rate to drop. The most important way, however, to keep your rate down is to drive safely. There is simply no better way to save money on your automobile insurance than to make sure you can avoid using it in the first place.

A Beginners Guide to Digital Scrapbooking
Digital scrapbooking has fast become a viable and popular option to the customary “cut and paste” craft. While it still takes imagination and creativity, the process of producing a finished product can be more forgiving. Scanners and computer graphic software have replaced traditional tools, like scissors and glue. On the downside, if you were starting from scratch, digital scrapbooking would be a much more expensive prospect if you had to go out and purchase a computer and all the peripheral hardware that you’ll require. At that point, scissors, glue and some creativity don’t seem like such a bad alternative.
Now that the computer has become commonplace, along with scanners, high-quality printers and digital cameras, digital scrapbooking has become a practical option. Graphic software is also something that users are becoming more comfortable with – especially when the software has been developed specifically for the scrapbooking enthusiast.
A lot of very good graphic software packages come with libraries of images and clip art that can assist the user with choices for backgrounds and other embellishments on the page. For those who are in need of a bit of a creative kick-start, some packages will offer pre-designed templates as a starting point. With these professionally developed layouts, all one needs to do is add photos and maybe a bit of text and you’ve got a polished product that looks like it took hours to design and assemble. You’ll find that such templates usually allow for customization so that if you want to change a particular colour, to match an item in a photo for example, you can adjust elements of the template to give it a more cohesive look. You may find that in flipping through a library of templates, you’ll find elements from some that you’d prefer to incorporate into others. That’s where the beauty of digital scrapbooking really begins to shine. It’s an easy exercise to Copy & Paste items from one template to another, and reposition, resize, recolor (to your heart’s content), etcetera, until you’ve achieved a look that you’re happy with. You can also do this with scissors and paper – but only once!
Better quality graphics packages will also allow you to adjust the overall transparency of an image. If you want to dress up a stock library background and give it a slightly richer look, you could copy a second background image on top of it and adjust the transparency of the copied image so that it’s barely perceptible. The resulting image will look more visually interesting with a bit of extra texture without the viewer being aware of how it was constructed. Try doing that with paper.
Another key element that can make a huge difference to a page is text. And it’s not just what you say, but how you say it. Thoughtful selection of typeface plays a key roll in keeping with the overall theme of your page. A calligraphic script font can add elegance to a wedding theme. An informal italic can be perfect for a travel piece and a clean sans serif makes for an easy read if you’ve got a lot of text on the page. There are literally thousands of typefaces to choose from, and if you’re lucky enough to have a graphics package that comes with a large selection of fonts, your only challenge is going to be making a decision as to what to use. Don’t make the mistake of going overboard and using a lot of different type faces on one page (unless you really want it to look like a ransom note!). Not only do you have control over your choice of font, you also can play with colour, point size, and (if you’ve either got a really good graphics package or a lot of patience) arrangement of the text. There’s no reason text has to follow a straight line – you can lay it out in a sweeping curve or arrange it to fit around photos or other objects on the page. You can also add another layer of texture by adding a drop shadow to make the text look like it’s lifting off the page.
Photos always add to the appeal of a page, and pictures with people are always the most interesting. Once you start working with photos on your computer, you’ll soon realize that photo editing software will be a useful addition to your suite of software. High end packages like Corel PhotoPaint or Adobe Photoshop can handle anything you’ll want to throw at them, but they can be expensive investments and time consuming to learn. You might want to start off with something more elementary, like the bitmap (photo) editing software that comes with your operating system or an office software suite. Most digital camera manufacturers supply software with their products to allow you to transfer images from your camera to your computer, and in the process give you some control over brightness, contrast, colour correction, orientation, etc. You may even be provided with some basic retouching capabilities like red eye reduction and cropping.
One important point to remember is that your camera is probably generating files that are much higher resolution than you’ll require on your page layout. A six mega pixel camera is capable of reproducing an excellent image at 8×10 inches, but if you’re going to take that same photo and lay it out as a smaller 4×5 inch image in your scrapbook – it’s actually one quarter of it’s intended size, and should therefore also be one quarter of the original file size. This is a process called re-sampling (which I’ll explain in detail in another article). If you don’t resample your image down to a smaller file size (especially if you intend on putting 3 or 4, or more, images on one page), you’re going to end up with a file of your page layout that is so huge, that you’ll probably gag your printer when you try to run a hardcopy. The print file will be so large that your printer will most likely not have enough memory to handle printing the entire image and may either refuse to print anything, or only print out a portion of the image on the page and then just stop. But, if you do it right, you page will be a thing of beauty!
One last point: once you’ve printed out your page, there’s nothing stopping you from adding even more dimension to it by framing it using traditional scrapbook methods of layering materials and fasteners. Digital scrapbooking can add a whole new dimension of creativity to a project. Just as with traditional scrapbooking, start easy and get used to the tools you have at your command before taking on a mammoth project – and then go wild!

Businesses that have undergone the process of registering, training and certifying as ISO 9000 compliant will tell you that it is nothing short of tiresome. From attempting to decipher the complex language of the manuals to the actual implementation of the ISO 9000 standards, the entire process can be overwhelming to unsuspecting managers.
Over 300 software solutions are available for guidance on the process. These programs generally assist in the creation, implementation and management of the quality control system. In addition, hundreds of consulting firms exist throughout the world and offer ISO 9000 solutions. Either of these options can help you begin the difficult process of ISO 9000 certification.
Experts have estimated that it takes approximately 7-10 months to read and understand the complex ISO 9000 manual. In addition to the time it takes to actually read through the manual, companies should take into consideration the cost of the auditor’s visit. You certainly want to make sure you understand what is expected of you before you dish out upwards of $10,000 for the auditor. If you are not prepared at the time of the auditor’s visit, he or she will certainly be happy to come back for a second round. However, this will cost your company even more money and can quickly become a very expensive process.
Companies offering ISO 9000 solutions can help your company to save time and money. By helping you with the entire process, from understanding the training manuals to grilling you on issues that the auditor will cover, you can expect big savings and a much less daunting process. If your company needs ISO 9000 help, you should consult with a specialist.
Many good resources on ISO 9000 are available through the web. An excellent book is ISO 9000 Answer Book by Rob Kantner. This book is written in plain English that is easier to read and understand than the complex certification manuals, and offers assistance with ISO 9000 solutions. The book covers the details of some of the most frequently asked questions from companies around the world. ISO 9000 Answer Book is an excellent resource for both novices and those experienced in the ISO 9000 process.

Where To Begin Looking For A Home Improvement Loan Lender
Finding a home improvement loan lender is not as hard as people seem to believe. There are many different places to begin your search. This includes, your local bank, local finance companies and by going onto the internet and searching online loan companies. The first place you should look would be your local lenders. Start by searching the bank you have your accounts with to find a home improvement loan lender. Many banks will offer you a better loan if you have good credit or if you have had loans with them before and had paid your loan on time while having this loan. After searching your local bank, check with your local finance companies. These types of companies are more lenient to new clients being they make these types of loans to people everyday. These types of companies do not have as much overhead as other lenders because they only make these certain loans all the time and do not deal with banking accounts.
Another place to search is by going online and typing, ?home improvement loan lender? in your search section and by clicking continue. When searching online, you will find that there are several different home improvement loan lender companies to choose from. Sometimes there are so many, you will need to do a thorough search of each individual lender and each of their interest rates and the type of flexibility they offer with there loan terms. Some online lenders offer a special search tool in which many different lenders pool their information into one database. This is helpful because when a client requests a loan quote, they will have the option of receiving many different quotes form the companies that are willing to work with you on makes this loan for you. Make sure to request as many quote as you possibly can so you may reference these later.
Closing The Deal With Your Home Improvement Loan Lender
After you have done your searching for a home improvement loan lender and have compiled several quotes from several different lenders, it time to sit down and go through the stack of quotes you have received. The right home improvement lender for you will be the one who offers the lowest interest rates, flexible loan terms and low extra fees, which include, underwriting fees, closing costs, appraisal fees and any legal paper preparation. When you have found the right lender which offers you the best deal; make an appointment with the home improvement loan lender to go over the quote before you sign any legal papers which bind you to the loan contract. Always make sure you get the same deal you were offered when you got your first quote. After you have signed the legal paperwork and have received your funds, make sure you buy your materials to make your home improvements so you do not use the funds for anything else. You do not want to add any extra debt to what you may already have.

Visitors Skim – Why to Use Blog Summaries
As a web developer, I think that one of the easiest pitfalls to run into is assuming that the content on your page is as interesting to your readers as it is to you. Whether we are talking about features, or tools, or images – adding those things often have us grinning like proud fools and bouncing on our well-flattened computer chairs with a shout of ‘Woot! I’m so good. Everyone is going to love my new [insert some new feature / tool / etc.. here].’
But is that a reality? The answer is, sadly, no. Our happy developer often doesn’t realize that most users not only do not care, but worse, they don’t even notice it. Why is it that a user can visit our page (even multiple times!) and still not notice some new feature we’ve added? The answer is simple – web surfers skim.
Now, most web folks are aware of this habit. Unfortunately, developers often think that the solution to that is to make the text bigger, brighter, underlined, italic, flashing, bouncing, and talking (or, Heaven forbid!, all of the above). Have those same developers sit back and watch a user surf their website, and they are often shocked at how often people flat out ignore those things. Why?
In all its flashing brightness it’s no longer a feature – it’s an annoyance. People tend to visually block out annoyances just like a regular web surfer trains themselves to no longer even see most ads on a page. People tend to block out all annoying things in the same way.
The other reason that a user may not notice is that it depends on what they are visiting your site for. If you are visiting this blog right now, you’ll see multiple post bits on the main page. If you are looking for information on CSS, you will be looking at some keywords that you know. Some other keywords might be styles, rules, selectors, sheets, etc… for things that your experience tells you would typically go along with CSS.
Looking for those things, you skim for those words on the page. However, if you are looking for information on DOM scripting… your keywords would be entirely different. In that case, your primary words might be DOM, DOM 2, and DOM 3 and your keywords might be things like scripting, object model, child, node, etc… for things that you might be looking for with DOM.
What this means to a web developer is that you can never account for what a user is going to see on your page. A web surfer is the epitome of someone who ’sees what they want to see’ rather than all the information. So, to accomodate your visitors, you need to adjust your perspective and realize that you can never fully account for what they are seeing on your page – it will differ from person to person, and even day to day per person depending on what they are looking for.
That understood, let’s consider the problem with most blogs. By default, most blogs are set to show one or more full posts on the main page. This is, inherently, going to make limit what your viewers can actually skim – particularly if you present a main page to them that is the equivalent of about 10 written pages of multiple blog posts. This is often what happens, and you’ll see many blogs like that. The main page is actually about 6 or posts one after another.
If I post 90% of the time on CSS, but my last two posts (shown at the top of the long main page in full) happen to on different topics, a reader can skim through quite a lot of information and think they won’t find what they are looking for on the blog. Not only do those long front pages make for some increased loading time (another deterrant), but if they have to skim down through that much information, chances are good that they won’t choose to. The back button is a lot easier to click. Sure, it works out great if your first post or two are on exactly what you are looking for, but how likely is that? Not very, in my perspective.
So, how do you increase the amount of information they can skim for their keywords on a blog? List your posts instead of displaying them in full. You can just show the title, or you can show a title and a separate summary of the post, or you can do a title with part of the actual post showing. I definitely think that all blogging software should adjust it so that posts are shown in summary form by default, but that’s another discussion. Presenting your information in a more concise way gives the user more possibilities to skim and find what they are looking for that day.
For certain, I can say that WordPress, Blogger, and the Expression Engine all have a default that shows the pages in full (versus a summary), so those are the ones I’ll talk about fixing. I haven’t checked the others, but I’d wager a guess it’s the same in many cases. For now, let me briefly tell you how to fix WordPress, Blogger, and EE.
In WordPress, I think the easiest way to do this is to use the handy little more function.
